Inspire Madras is very happy to announce the Wiele and Klein Tribute Show at Madras Square (Historical Photos of 19th and early 20th century India). This marks the culmination of the Conservation of the glass plates. We are very happy that the pioneering works of these Masters are up on the wall for ALL to enjoy.

The show was inaugurated by His Excellency Mr Mark Van de Vreken, the Consulate General of Belgium in Chennai. The evening was conducted by Mr Filiep De Zutter, Resident manager - South Asia, DEME Group. We are thankful to both of them and our distinguished Guests.

Wiele & Klein were Pioneering European photographers in India between 1885 - 1940. They photographed mostly on glass plates, dry gelatin being their preferred medium.

Their super large format plates 12" x 10" format reveal astounding detail and artistry - stands unrivalled even today.

Inspire Madras had the unique opportunity to conserve the surviving 1500+ glass plates (Owners: Vintage Vignettes - D Krishnan, Timeri Murari and others) in the period 1990 - 2019 in stages.

We are happy to present the brilliance of the works of Wiele & Klein. There are sixteen text panels documenting early history.

On the whole, a treat for artists' eyes and also to the historian or academic. Please do enjoy this rare treat!

All are welcome!
